Chalcides guentheri (Günther's Cylindrical Skink / Günter'in Silindirik Kertenkelesi)

Chalcides guentheri (Günther's Cylindrical Skink / Günter'in Silindirik Kertenkelesi) from Al Jablah, Tartous - 26.04.2007.

Chalcides guentheri seems to be an endemic species of the southern Levantregion. It has been recorded from a small area including N Israel, S Lebanon, NW Jordan and Golan Heights-SW Syria. Occurs in stepe habitats of Mediterranean ecozone. A tiny skink with elongated body, very reduced, fingerless limps. The head is elongated, not distinct from neck. The eyes are relatively large, with well-developed movable eyelids. Snout-venth lengt varies between 9 and 16 cm; original tail is usually nearly equal to body length, regenerated tail is shorter. A diurnal, highly secretive terrestril species. It spends majority of time under Stones and leaf litters around the bases of bushes. We found that it is oviparous as being different congeners (viviparous).
