Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Common Pipistrelle / Cüce Yarasa)

Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Common Pipistrelle / Cüce Yarasa) from Bornova, IZMIR - 13.03.2010.

The biology of all pipistrelles is similar. They fly moderate heights with a rapid, jerky flight, turning frequently. Half an hour or so after sunset they leave the roost to hunt small insects, especially gnats. They go into hibernation relatively late, in central Europe often not before December. If you catch sight of a bat flying outdoors on a warm winter day, it is almost sure to be a pipistrelle. Female pipistrellus usually produce two young. The life span of these small animals can be surprisingly long, up to 15 years, within an average of 3 years. The various species are very similar and can often only be identified by their teeth.
