Fritillaria carica (Crying Bride, Carian Inverted Tulip / Karya Ters Lalesi, Ağlayan Gelin)

Fritillaria carica (Crying Bride, Carian Inverted Tulip / Karya Ters Lalesi, Ağlayan Gelin) from İzmir - 14.03.2010.

An endemic flower to Turkeywhich I've captured it in Nif Mountain (Kemalpaşa, Izmir) at this weekend. Since I could not find any proper English name of this beauty, I had to feel put one inspiring by its Turkish name:)  The name of “Ağlayan Gelin”, i.e., “Crying bride” stemming from its dropping the water deposited on the petals during the night time, in early morning. The other name, “Carian Inverted Tulip” is came after the name of this Ancient Region of Anatolia, Caria and its sorrowful stance of this beauty.

Crying Bride is a  SW Anatolian (Antalya, Muğla, Denizli, Aydın and  İzmir provinces) endemic bulbous, perennial plant in the family Liliaceae having a vertical distribution between 200-1700 m asl. The flowering time is from March to May and it prefers pine or juniper forests and rocky places, usually on limestone. It is a dwarf species with one to three yellow flowers per stem, 10 cm in April, leaves alternate grey-green.
