Lyciasalamandra luschani luschani (Common Luschan’s Salamander/ Esas Luschan’ın Semenderi, Fethiye Semenderi) [Male / Erkek] from Dodurga-Eşen, MUĞLA - 14.02.2011.

A subspecies of a politypic species, Lyciasalamandra luschani (Luschan’s Salamander, Lycia Salamander / Likya Semenderi, Luschan'nın Semenderi) which ranges from Fethiye to Finike (Fethiye, Dodurga, Kaş & Finike) in south-west Anatolia, Turkey and adjacent Greek islands, Meyisti & Kekova islands. Apparently it has a fragmented distribution. Its range is divided into three areas of distribution of species that in each one it is represented with different subspecies (L. luschani luschani, L. l. basoglui & L. l. finikensis). There are wide gaps between the three subspecies. The known sites are located at the altitudes between the sea level up to 840 m asl. It has similar biology, habitat, ecology and major threats like all other Turkish terrestrial tailed-amphibians.

The short descriptions and distributions of the known subspecies as follows:

Lyciasalamandra luschani luschani (Common Luschan’s Salamander/ Esas Luschan’ın Semenderi, Fethiye Semenderi): The dorsum is shiny dark brown; it is covered with irregularly distributed yellowish spots. The parotid glands are light yellow with small black dots. The lateral parts of the body are whitish-grey. Both extremities and tail are light yellow with dark brown spots. There are also dark spots on the dorsal of the tail. Thetotal length is up to 13.0 cm. It is distributed between Finike and Patara in fragmented populations in Muğla province at the altitudes of 80-400 m asl. It was also recorded in a small isolated area by Author as a new locality (here I do not prefer to give the exact locality for their conservation).

Lyciasalamandra luschani basoglui (Başoğlu’s Salamander / Başoğlu’nun Semenderi, Kaş Semenderi): The dorsal part of the body is light yellowish-pink, covered with randomly distributed Brown spots of different sizes and brightneses. The parotids are lighter than the dorsal part of the body. The lateral parts of the body are greyish-white. Both the extremities and tail are reddish with very small black spots. The total length reaches up to 14.2 cm.It distributed in Kaş, Antalya province, Turkey including Meyisti and Kekova islands. Its vertical range varies between 60m and 800 m asl. It was also recorded in a small stream bed in the vicinity of Kaş from a new locality –which was not mentioned in Literature- by Author (here I do not prefer to give the exact locality for their conservation).

Lyciasalamandra luschani finikensis (Finike’s Salamander / Finike Semenderi): The dorsal body is blackish dark brown, covered with irregularly distributed small greyish white spots. The same type of colour and pattern continues on the dorsal part of the tail. Both the dorsal parts of the extremities and the lateral part of the tail are a meat-like red, covered with light brown spots. In Literature it has been stated that the total length reaches up to 12.2 cm. However an adult female from Arif (Finike) was measured approx. 15 cm by Author. It was recorded from Finike (Antalya province) at the altitudes between the sea level and 750 m asl.

According to the Author all subspecies belonging to the species represent separate species since they are so different in their appearances and also they are showing allopatric distributions with wide gaps.
